Analysis of best practices, schools on cyber security for elderly and teens
Project “Cyber Safety and Security for the Elderly and Teens” RE for the needs of the project Cyber Security and Protection of the Elderly and Teenagers, the association team has prepared an Analysis of best practices and school curricula for cyber security for the elderly and teens. The purpose of this analysis is to explore best practices and make recommendations for teaching seniors how to stay while using the Internet. On the other hand, this analysis is about of best practices and strategies in teaching teens about computer security and reviewing school curricula that teach cybersecurity in school subjects. Our methodological approach to this topic is a qualitative method, describing and reviewing best practices in learning older people and teens about computer security, through the analysis of educational texts, research publications, projects and school curricula on best practices in the training of the elderly and teens who are posted on the Internet worldwide. The team of PE in the analysis gives recommendations on the easiest and most interesting way for the elderly and teenagers to learn about cyber security, and from the analyzed good practices, we came to the conclusion that the elderly learn best when someone guides them through the learning process – mentors. The most common cyber threats and topics that should be included in the training module are: • hacks, passwords, login / logout, phishing, computer viruses, online payments, security settings. The basic and most necessary topics for protection are: • use of antivirus, • Lack of trust in unknown email addresses or links, • secure web browsers, • change passwords regularly every few weeks, • regularly update the software to their latest version, • Check the security levels of the site before opening, always look for an https address. Based on the good practices analyzed in the analysis, PE for teens recommends: gamified education, competitive and interactive game with theoretical segments, for cyber security, while teens use mobile phones, computers, game consoles, social media. Regarding the analyzed curricula of schools in our country and comparing them with the curricula of schools in neighboring countries, our proposal is the following specific topics to consider when designing the game: • safe work on the Internet • protection of personal data privacy and copyright • Email (contacts, security, spam) • creating positive digital footprints • Recognizing the types of violence through the Internet and preventive ways to do so • critical assessment of the reliability of the information • Malware protection • Passwords and secure accounts • Social media security • Backup internet data The project is financially supported by the US Embassy in North Macedonia.
