Cyber Security Support for micro and small enterprises

The goal of the project “Cyber Security Support for micro small enterprises, supported by the US Embassy in North Macedonia, is to increase the usage of cyber security measures and improve the safety behavior in micro, small and medium enterprises.

Aiming at awareness and knowledge raising about basic cyber security and safety we are targeting not only employees and managers in micro and small enterprises but also the wider audience through wide spread campaign on social media.

Therefore, whether you are an individual, employee or manager interested in cyber security, follow the links bellow and see how you can improve your work regarding this important topic.

  • For individuals we recommend Cyber Security Quiz for micro and small enterprises.
  • For managers and employees, we recommend Cyber Risk for micro and small enterprises.

Next, you can follow the training modules and mentoring sessions.

  • Companies – Providers of IT services

    Within the project, our project team prepared a register of local service providers in the field of IT (available below) which provides data on IT service providers to all small, micro and medium companies in Macedonia.

    If you need services such as:

    – Establishment of a basic IT system;
    – Diagnosis, service and advice for maintenance of computers / IT equipment;
    – Resolving IT defects and incidents;
    – Consulting for procurement of new equipment / server / software licenses, etc.

    Look for an IT service provider in our Registry and get in touch with them.

    The companies that are in this register have independently expressed interest in being part of it and the quality of their services has not been checked by Readiness for Europe and the donor. The responsibility for starting a business cooperation with an IT service provider is the responsibility of the company itself.

    Therefore, if you are an individual or an employee and are interesting in seeing how much you know about cyber security, how to be further protected and also to get advices and directions for next steps, we advise you to take the quiz.

    The quiz is divided in 10 parts (pages) that cover all aspects of cyber security and safety in the work place.

    To answer the quiz, follow this link.

  • Cyber Risk for micro and small enterprises

    The questionnaire for Cyber Risk for micro and small enterprises is an assessment that identifies where corporate performance in cybersecurity can be improved.

    Therefore, if you are an employee or manager in a micro / small company and you want to know what are the cyber risks in your business, we recommend that you follow our questionnaire for cyber risks assessment.

    It will help you measure the risks your company is exposed to and give you specific guidelines for following various training modules and mentoring sessions to help you improve your safety and security when working online.

    The Cyber Risk assessment for micro and small enterprises, along with a guide to the next steps, can be found at the following link.

  • Mentoring sessions for SMEs

    Mentoring sessions are individual (mentor-company) and are intended for all micro and small companies that are interested in being led by a mentor-expert in cyber security, in the process of implementing measures to reduce the cyber risks of their company.

    They last about two hours and are realized by mentors who are experienced professionals with many years of experience in the field of cyber security and protection.

    What does mentoring involve?

    – Interpretation and explanation of your Risk Assessment REPORT identifying the key risks facing your company and the PLAN / recommendations to deal with them.

    – Assistance in implementing measures to reduce your company’s cyber risks

    WHAT DID THE PARTCIPANTS SAY ABOUT THE MENTORING SESSIONS…

    “It is a fact that with the development of the information society come many challenges and cyber risks. Dealing with those risks is a complex problem for the companies, which are becoming increasingly aware that cyber risks need to be detected in a timely manner and find measures to manage them. The mentoring session offered by the project is an excellent opportunity for micro and small enterprises to acquire knowledge and skills for recognizing cyber risks in their work, and through analysis to create measures for protection against risks and dealing with challenges.” – Marina from the company Toseski – IZ Sonja Toseska, Prilep

    “Thank you very much for the opportunity to learn something new. Last week we saw the videos and I made a small presentation to my team, to capture once again the important things we need to change to strengthen our security. At the mentoring session I received some guidelines and recommendations that I have not used until now. Very interesting were the “tricks” on how to make a strong password, but to be easy to remember, and also the directions how often/what we need to change. Although computers are great tools, we must not forget that the most vulnerable link in this whole system is the people, who must constantly learn and develop, and remember that the cyber security depends on their working attitude. We look forward to apply the knowledge and to see you on another occasion. “- Teodora from the company Astibo Fashion Group, Stip

    “This was a great session to improve my knowledge of how my company to be safe online. The mentor explained our cyber risks but also suggested measures that we need to implement to reduce them. I recommended the Cyber Security Quiz and the training modules to my colleagues – they are great! ”- Baze from the company “Kontura”, Skopje

    “I was afraid of how we would deal with the risks when we opened our online store, what influence they would have in our operations. On social media I saw an announcement that the association Readiness for Europe through its project offers the opportunity to fill in a simple questionnaire to identify the cyber risks but also to get a plan for dealing with them. I even had the choice to apply for a mentoring session with a cyber expert. The session exceeded my expectations, the expert helped me a lot. Now I am sure that the measures I started to take, suggested by the expert, will reduce my cyber risks of my company. Thanks to the team and the cyber expert “- Dejanka from the company” Storybooks and Toys “, Skopje

    “We are not a big company, but now I know that even as small business, we are also exposed to risks when working online. I will share the experience I gained at the mentoring session with my colleagues. And we will take the measures pointed out to me by the cyber expert as soon as possible. It is good that the website of the association has information on this topic, so whenever I want I can find information and materials on cyber security “- Maja from the company Dermaestetika, Skopje

  • Frequently asked questions

    What does it mean for my company to be cyber secure?

    Your company is cyber secure when you have taken organizational and technical measures, which should be implemented by both managers and employees in the company.

    What should I do when I want to use my family’s computer for work?

    If the computer is used by more than one person, ensure that everyone has a separate user profile in the operating system. This will prevent other family members from accessing official documents and will reduce the risk of accidental deletion. Also, make sure that you have a licensed operating system on your computer that is regularly updated, as well as an active virus protection tool. And lastly – check how you connect to the internet – public WiFi networks are not secure!

    I often hear the word cyber hygiene, but I do not know what it means for my company?

    Cyber hygiene refers to a set of practices such as changing passwords, updating software, upgrading hardware/equipment, data backups, active antivirus, which you can implement to increase cyber security and safety in the company. These practices apply to all employees in your company but also to your IT service provider (IT administrator) – if you have one.

    We have electronic documents on the company/official computers that are of great importance and significance for our company and I want to protect them. How?

    It is a good practice to have a list of all the types of documents and information you work with. For each type to define how sensitive they are and how they should be stored. Each employee should have their own user profile with a strong password and through that they will access the documents. Additionally, set up regular backups. With the help of backups, when someone deletes data or destroys a virus, you will be able to recover it.

    How do I protect the document I want to send by email?

    There are several ways to do this. Perhaps the easiest way is to password protect the document, and send it to the recipient through another channel. For example, in the PDF document put a password in the permissions and then send it by email, and send the password to the client via Viber.
